Among the many traditions shared by the United States and Japan,
a love for baseball may be one of the oldest and deepest.
Although there are subtle differences in how the game is played in the two countries,
the sound of bat hitting ball is one of the pleasures of summer on both sides of the Pacific.
I am pleased to congratulate the New Tokyo University Baseball League on the occasion of its fortieth anniversary season, and I am especially pleased to note the presence of several American students in the league. Through the friendly competition of baseball, students can understand the greater truth of international exchange, that mutual understanding and friendship are essential ingredients of contemporary life. May the best team win! |

アメリカと日本に共通する伝統の中でも、野球に対する愛着は、最も古くまた
深いものかもしれません。二つの国の試合の行われ方に、微妙な違いはあるものの、
ボールを打つバットの音は、太平洋の両側で、夏の風物詩のひとつとなっています。
東京新大学野球連盟の40周年にあたり、お慶び申し上げますと共に、 当リーグにアメリカ人の選手も含まれていることを特に嬉しく思います。 野球の試合を通して、学生の皆さんは、国際交流のより大きな意味を、 そして相互理解と友情は、現代生活の極めて重要な一部であることを体得されることでしょう。 皆様のご検討をお祈り申し上げます。 |

To the New Tokyo University Baseball League:
On the occasion of the 40th Anniversary of the New University Baseball League of Tokyo, I express to you all our most sincere congratulation. This year, baseball is included in the Olympic Games of Barcelona. In our country, baseball is very popular, it is our national sport. People from all edges enjoy baseball, in cluding University students. Cuban people loves sports and the government support its developments. I express my best wishes to your league and I hope the sport interchanges between Cuba and Japan, continue developing in the future. |

今年は、バルセロナ・オリンピックで野球が正式種目に加えられる年でもあります。 我が国では、野球は国技であり大変人気があります。もちろん大学野球を含めて、 あらゆる年代の人達の間で野球が盛んに行われています。 キューバ国民はスポーツが大変好きな国民であり、政府もスポーツ振興のために 多くの援助を行っています。 貴連盟が沢山の成功を収められることをお祈りするとともに、日本キューバ 両国民間のスポーツ交流がますます発展することを願っています。 |

Since Baseball was said to have been started by the milkmaids and farmers
in a rudimentary form in the 14th century England, its popularity has now
spread to almost all nooks and corners of the world. Especially,
with the introduction of game in the Olympic Games recently,
I am confident that its popularity will continue to grow.
Baseball is a game which is benefical for building-up health and team spirit,
and is a good mebium of contact between peoples of differnt countries.
I am happy to learn that the New Tokyo University Baseball League is completing 40 years of its founding. In the new context of the association of Baseball with Olympic Games. I am sure the New Tokyo University Baseball League will endeavour to touch new heights in the game, I wish them every success. |

14Cのイギリスで農家の女の人や男の人にベースボールと言われるようになってから、
野球の流行は今、世界のあらゆるところに広がっています。
特に、最近におけるオリンピックでの野球ゲームの紹介状によると、私は、
野球の流行は広がり続けるものと確信している。野球は体を育てるにも
精神を養うにもとても良いものです。又、野球は違う国々の人々が交流するのに
とてもよい手段であります。
私は、東京新大学野球連盟の40周年にめぐり会うことができとても幸福です。 オリンピックに関連して野球の新しい環境の中に、東京新大学野球連盟が 必ずや試合(大会)の新しき頂点に到達するための努力をされていかれるでしょう。 私は、それらすべての成功を期待します。 |
